Why September is the New January...

It is hard to believe that September is already here, how did it sneak up so fast?!  As the kids return to school, routines get started, new activities are enrolled in, is September the new January?  Our kids are starting their “new resolutions” for the school year, now is a great time for us adults to also start new resolutions.  New routines for families give more time and impetus to create new individual habits for us adults or also to have a little more time to make a change in our lives with anything we are unhappy with.

WHY SEPTEMBER IS GOOD FOR CAREER CHANGE…

If you want a change in your career and know what you want to do, September and October are some of the best months to be looking for jobs.[i] Summer is a tough time to look for jobs as is November/December.  September and October is the best time in the back half of the year to look for jobs after summer vacations are wrapping up and before the holidays when hiring really slows down.  Companies are hiring and if you know what you want your next step to be, now is the time to get out there and make it.

If you want a career change, but not sure what that is, now is the time to figure it out.    Utilize the fall to do career coaching to really hone in on what you want in your next step.  Want to change industries, but not sure what?  A coach can help you figure it out.  Dissatisfied with your current position, but not sure why?  A coach can help you figure out what is driving your dissatisfaction and next steps to a more fulfilling career.  January and February (in addition to September/October) are the best times to look for a job in most industries.  It is the start of the new year and although January can start out slow, it picks up towards the end of the month, so you want to enter into January knowing what you want and going after it.  September is the perfect time to really hone in on what you want, strategies to get you there, and put in place the foundation for taking the next steps at the start of the next year.

WHY SEPTEMBER IS GOOD FOR PARENTING CHANGE…

Over summer routines tend to fall off, schedules are constantly changing, every week is different; but with the start of the new year, now is the time to start new routines and habits for your kids.  Over the past couple of years, we have struggled getting out the door in the morning without what seems like endless nagging from me.  This September is our opportunity to try is a fresh.  We have new schools, older kids, and a new strategy to get going in the morning without all the nagging.  My September resolution is to set the expectation that the kids will get ready on their own without the nagging and reminders.  We started this on Tuesday and two days in, success!  I have tried many strategies in the past, but always seem to fail, because of me.  I can never seem to bite my tongue and let the boys get ready on their own. This school year my resolution is not to nag, but to set the expectation and then see how it goes.  Perfect so far, no, but way less stressful and effective, yes!

WHY SEPTEMBER IS GOOD FOR LIFE CHANGE…

With the school routines and work routines back into a more consistent groove, now is the time to start a new life change.  Want to get back to the gym?  Work it into the schedules now.  Want to lose a couple of pounds?  Start now with a healthier diet and more consistent exercise, now, before the holiday madness.  Want more work life balance?  Work with a coach, or do some of your own soul searching, to figure out where all your time disappears to and how to prioritize differently.

Sure, you can wait until January, but if you want to make a significant change, September may actually be a better time. Carpe diem, seize the day and get started.  If you have trouble getting started on your own, hire a coach to help you get started, prioritize and hold you accountable to the changes you want to make.  No matter whether you go it alone or do it with a coach partner, now is the time!
